What is Accreditation?
The process of accreditation is voluntary. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. Accreditation in the United States involves non-governmental entities as well as governmental agencies. Institutions seeking accreditation open their doors to be thoroughly evaluated by their peers. Accreditation is the process of reviewing a school’s programs and policies to see if it meets criteria set by an outside agency. When a school is found to meet the minimum criteria, it is granted accreditation.
Why is accreditation important?
Accreditation is meant to protect students, schools, and employers. It ensures that a school is educating its students and meeting quality standards. Accreditation is both a status and a process. As a status, accreditation provides public notification that an institution or program meets standards of quality set forth by an accrediting agency.
As a process, accreditation reflects the fact that in achieving recognition by the accrediting agency, the institution or program is committed to self-study and external review by one's peers in seeking, not only to meet standards, but to continuously seek ways in which to enhance the quality of education and training provided.
When a student receives a diploma from a school accredited by the right agency, he can be assured that it will be accepted by employers. Likewise, when an employer is looking to hire, she can be assured that a graduate from an accredited school has received the training necessary and didn’t pay for a degree from a diploma mill school, or a school that doesn’t adhere to quality standards.
Why isn’t every school accredited?
Accreditation is a voluntary process. Not all schools believe in the same high-quality standards brought by accreditation. It is easier to not be accredited. If a school isn’t accredited they don’t have to report or validate their student’s success.
I was told computer training centers couldn’t be accredited?
Well, if this is what you were told, then LaSalle has proven this wrong. The school that says they can’t be accredited doesn’t want to adhere to the high standards accreditation brings. If a school isn’t accredited it means they can’t meet accreditation standards. You should thoroughly investigate your options for education. Choosing the right school is a very important choice. It can impact the rest of your life.
